Born in Frankfurt-am-Main, Erich Fromm (1900-1980) studied sociology and psychoanalysis. In 1933, he emigrated as a member of the Frankfurt School of social thinkers to the United States, moved to Mexico in 1950, and spent his twilight years between 1974 and 1980 in Switzerland. His books Fear of Freedom (1941) and The Art of Loving (1956) made him famous. Other well-known books are Marx's Concept of Man, Beyond the Chains of Illusion, and The Essential Fromm.

Ich habe das Buch mit großem Vergnügen gelesen. Zum einen war es interessant, wie ähnlich Fromms Einschätzung unserer Gesellschaft vor über 40Jahren unserer heutigen Situation ist. Man hat den Eindruck, dass sich kaum etwas verändert hat. Zumindest wenn man es aus der Entfernung betrachtet, wie es Fromm tut.Ein weiterer interessanter Aspekt, war eine "etwas andere Sicht" auf Marx. Man muss nicht mit allem einverstanden sein, was Fromm über Marx sagt, aber es gibt doch zumindest ein differenzierteres Bild als die holzschnittartigen Einschätzungen aus der Zeit des kalten Krieges.Der für mich interessanteste Teil war die Verbindung zu den verschiedenen Religionen und die Erkenntnis, dass man sich nicht den Kopf kahlschneiden muss um im Himalaya nach Erlösung zu suchen. Philosophien, die das "Sein" stärker als das "Haben" betonen gibt es auch jenseits des Buddhismus und auch in der westlichen Philosophie.Alles in allem ein gelungenes, kurzweiliges und nachdenkliches Buch.

Neue Lebenseinstellung lindert KonsumrauschZu Beginn meines Berufslebens verfiel ich in einen kurzfristigen Konsumrausch: mein Leben bestand vorwiegend aus neuen Hemden, Hosen und Möbeln. Da kam mir das Buch von Erich Fromm erneut in die Finger. Als Jugendlicher hatte ich es schon einmal gelesen und wähnte mich damals als moralischer Sieger (schließlich besaß ich ja nichts).In meiner neuen Lebenssituation fühlte ich mich allerdings ertappt und begann, das Buch erneut zu lesen. Man kann es mit folgendem Satz zusammenfassen:"Was ist der Mensch, wenn er das ist, was er hat, und dann alles verliert?"Seither habe ich ein recht unverkrampftes Konsumverhalten, gehe dreimal im Jahr einkaufen und bin auf dem besten Wege, Medienforscher, Werbung und Trends zu ignorieren.Darüber hinaus mache ich mir ein schönes Leben und versuche "spontan kreativ tätig" zu sein.Ach ja, das ist nun 15 Jahre her. Wer weiß, vielleicht türmen sich bei mir schon wieder ein paar unbewusste materielle Wünsche, mit denen es aufzuräumen gilt: es wäre also an der Zeit, das Buch ein drittes Mal zu lesen.

He outlines logically that most problems humanity has is the strive for materialism. He compares things to be had as dead and qualities to be as living. Some of his insights are drawn from the Bible and show that God Himslef, by his very name, is the supreme "being", whose wish it is that man becomes like him. Fromm warns against the perils of "have" based societies, and conclusively demonstrates that "be" oriented individuals have one of the major keys to a better and more satisfying life.
