...Manche Passagen haben mich amüsiert und gut unterhalten, andere haben mich gelangweilt und befremdet. Ähnlich die Figuren - manche schrill und überdreht bis zur Klischeehaftigkeit, andere unglaubwürdig oder langweilig in ihrer Klischeehaftigkeit. Nur wenige Figuren gewinnen eine schemenhafte Tiefe, nur wenige Szenen haben mich emotional ergriffen. Die Ergreifendste war der Tod von Kater Jellybeans. Das Komödienhafte, auf das der Untertitel anspielt, habe ich zu selten sehen können.Fazit: Kann man lesen, muss man aber nicht gelesen haben. Mehr als drei Sterne sind hier nicht drin.

After reading "Started early, took my dog" I decided to read another one of Kate Atkinson's novels as soon as possible. Jackson Brodie and the other characters are woven into a brilliant plot with a lot of unexpected turns. The story lures the reader gently deeper and deeper into the mind of the heroes - or do you already know them by heart?? A hell of a read!

Meiner Meinung nach Atkinsons bis jetzt bestes Werk. Lustig ohne albern zu sein, spannend ohne Krimi-Klischees. Eher was für Leute, die mehr nach einem guten Roman als nach einem typischen Krimi suchen. Ein literarisch wertvoller und kurzweiliger Krimi!

Since I have enormously enjoyed the first two books of Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series (as well as two of her other books) it was not really a huge surprise that I enjoyed Jackson Brodie's third outing as well. Though 'When there will be Good News?' does take its time to get really going, the time is well spent on reintroducing and catching up with the familiar characters and introducing new ones. Just as the previous instalments, it is a complex story with multiple strands of narrative. I was quite intrigued to discover how these various narratives came be eventually together and how they connected with the first crime, a brutal murder that happened many years in the past which. The story is original, entertaining and (for me at least) quite unpredictable. There is suspense and humour, and I really found the whole book captivating and am already looking forward to the next one.

Der Untertitel, A jolly Murder Mystery, gibt die Marschrichtung an: ein Krimi, teilweise dramatisch und tragisch, dennoch stellenweise recht munter und voller Geheimnisse. Kein Krimi im üblichen Sinne, sondern eine ganz eigene Form, wie schon Case Histories, als dessen Fortsetzung One good Turn verstanden werden kann.Alles beginnt im Sommer während des Edinburgh Festivals mit einem kleinen Auffahrunfall. Die Menschen, die gerade in einer Schlange stehen, um Karten für eine Aufführung zu kaufen, sehen, wie der aggressive Hintermann mit einem Baseballschläger über den Fahrer herfällt, auf dessen Wagen er aufgefahren ist. Martin, ein Schriftsteller, der normalerweise keiner Fliege etwas zu Leide tut, wagt es, dazwischen zu gehen. Das wird sein Leben ändern. Auch für weitere Personen, die den Überfall beobachtet haben, ist danach nichts mehr, wie es vorher war. Es tauchen auf: eine Frauenleiche, die gleich wieder untertaucht, die geheimnisvolle Russin Tatjana, die aussieht wie die Frauenleiche, die frustrierte Ehefrau Gloria, der Krimiautor Martin, Ex-Polizist und Ex-Detektiv Jackson, den Lesern bekannt aus Case Histories, seine kapriziöse Freundin Julia (Schauspielerin), ein Opfer, das etwas zu verheimlichen hat, ein Bösewicht mit mysteriösen Motiven, die Kriminalbeamtin Louise und ihr kleinkrimineller Sohn Archie.Meisterhaft beherrscht Kate Atkinson den inneren Monolog, der die Innenwelt der Hauptfiguren unmittelbar und anhand lauter kleiner Szenen aus ihrem Leben offenbart. Dadurch ist jede Figur nachvollziehbar und weist immer ein Stück Identifikationsfläche auf, auch wenn sie noch so wenig mit dem eigenen Leben zu tun hat. Nur der Bösewicht ist etwas eindimensional, was ich für Absicht halte, da er eine fremdgesteuerte Figur ist, eine bloße Marionette des wahren Bösewichts. Aber auch der findet am Ende noch seinen Meister – und das ist nicht die Polizei, so viel sei verraten.Bei Kate Atkinson ist kein Adjektiv zu viel und keine Formulierung abgedroschen, gelegentlich grüßen aus dem Handlungsfluss augenzwinkernd Inseln aus kulturellen Versatzstücken. Die Handlung selbst ist – wie man es von ihren Büchern gewohnt ist – kunstvoll verwoben: Mehrere parallele Handlungsstränge fügen sich zu einem harmonischen Ende. Diesmal hat sie außerdem einen weiteren Kunstgriff angewendet, der sich mit dem Prinzip der russischen Puppen vergleichen lässt (die übrigens auch im Roman eine Rolle spielen), in denen immer weitere noch kleinere Puppen stecken, bis der Leser am Ende, wenn er die letzte Puppe gefunden hat, auch die Lösung findet.

Wonderfully written - and very very entertaining. One of the best novels I have read.
